Largemouth Bass: The king of freshwater gamefish, largemouth bass in our lakes can grow to impressive sizes. These aggressive predators are known for their spectacular strikes and acrobatic fights. Spring and fall are prime times to target them, but we catch 'em year-round. There's nothing quite like the thrill of a big bass smashing a topwater lure at dawn.
Crappie: Don't let their size fool you – these tasty panfish are a blast to catch and even better to eat. We target crappie year-round, but spring is when they really shine during the spawn. Expect fast action when we find a school, and get ready for some of the best fish fries you've ever had.
Walleye: These elusive predators are prized for both their fight and their flavor. We typically target walleye in deeper water, often using live bait rigs or trolling crankbaits. Fall is a great time to chase walleye, as they fatten up for winter. Landing a big 'eye is always a highlight of any trip.
Rainbow Trout: The lakes and rivers around Branson are home to some stellar rainbow trout fishing. These hard-fighting fish are a joy to catch on light tackle or fly gear. We catch rainbows year-round, but the cooler months often produce the best action. Get ready for some acrobatic jumps and delicious fillets.
Brown Trout: The true trophies of our trout waters, brown trout grow to impressive sizes in lakes like Taneycomo. These cunning predators are often caught by targeting structure with large lures or flies. Fall is prime time for big browns, as they become more aggressive before the spawn. Landing a monster brown trout is a true bucket list experience for many anglers.

Crappie are pan-sized favorites, typically 7-12 inches long. You'll find them schooling around brush piles, fallen trees, and other structure in 5-15 foot depths. Spring is prime time as they move shallow to spawn. Crappie are most active at dawn and dusk, so plan your trips accordingly. Anglers love their tasty white meat and the challenge of finding active schools. Light tackle adds to the fun - their paper-thin mouths make for an exciting fight on ultralight gear. My go-to setup is a small jig under a bobber, slowly worked around cover. Experiment with jig colors until you find what they want that day. Once you locate a school, you can often catch a bunch quickly. Just remember to leave some for next time!
Largemouth bass are the heavyweight champs of our lakes, usually topping out around 4-5 pounds but capable of hitting 10+ pounds. You'll find them lurking near underwater structure - fallen trees, weed beds, docks. They're ambush predators, so look for cover in 5-15 feet of water. Spring and fall are prime seasons when bass move shallow to feed. Anglers love largemouth for their aggressive strikes and acrobatic fights. Nothing beats the excitement of a big bass smashing a topwater lure! To up your odds, try working a plastic worm slowly along the bottom near structure. Patience and stealth are key - these fish can be wary. But when you hook into a chunky largemouth, you're in for a real battle. It's no wonder they're America's favorite gamefish.
Rainbow trout are a cold-water favorite, typically 12-16 inches long in our area. You'll find them in the cooler, well-oxygenated sections of rivers and streams, often near riffles and pools. Spring and fall offer the best fishing as water temperatures are ideal. Rainbows are known for their acrobatic fights and beautiful coloration. Anglers love targeting them with light tackle and fly fishing gear. These fish can be picky eaters, so matching the local insect hatch is key. My go-to technique is drifting small nymphs or eggs patterns near the bottom. For spin fishing, try small inline spinners or live worms under a float. Remember to approach carefully - rainbows spook easily in clear water. The challenge of fooling a wary trout and their excellent table fare make them a top target for many anglers.
Walleye are prized for their flaky white fillets and hard-fighting nature. Averaging 2-5 pounds, they prefer cooler, deeper waters but move shallow to feed. Look for them along drop-offs, points, and rocky structure. Spring and fall are peak seasons as they follow baitfish migrations. Walleye have excellent low-light vision, making dawn, dusk, and night prime fishing times. Anglers love the challenge of locating these sometimes finicky fish. When you do find them, be ready for their signature "tap-tap" bite. For best results, try slow-trolling crankbaits or bottom-bouncing live bait rigs. My local tip: focus on main lake points when a cold front moves through - walleye often stack up there. The fight and table fare make walleye well worth the effort.
Brown trout are the wary trophies of our cold-water streams, averaging 12-20 inches but capable of growing much larger. You'll find them in deeper pools and undercut banks, especially where there's good cover. Fall is prime time as they become more aggressive before spawning. Browns are known for their selective feeding and cunning nature, making them a real challenge to catch. Anglers prize them for their hard fights and the skill required to fool them. These fish are most active in low light, so focus on dawn and dusk. My local tip: try swinging large streamers through deep runs - big browns can't resist an easy meal. When you do hook one, be ready for a battle. Their size and smarts make landing a big brown trout a true accomplishment.
